Permit System

What is a Tadoba Safari Permit?

A Tadoba Safari Permit is an official entry authorization issued by the Maharashtra Forest Department and managed through the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). Every visitor entering the core zone or buffer zone of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve must possess a valid permit — no exceptions.

The permit system was introduced to regulate tourism, minimize human footprint on wildlife habitats, and ensure every safari delivers genuine, high-quality wildlife encounters. Permits are issued zone-wise, slot-wise, and vehicle-wise, making Tadoba one of India's most systematically managed national park tourism ecosystems.

Permits can be booked online via the official Maharashtra tourism portal up to 90 days in advance. A limited quota is also available at the gate for walk-in visitors, but these fill up extremely fast — especially during October to March peak season.

Permit Categories

Types of Tadoba Safari Permits

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve offers three distinct categories of safari permits, each with different access levels, pricing, and experiences.

Core Zone Permit

Access to the protected core buffer of Tadoba — the prime tiger habitat. This is the most sought-after permit, offering the highest probability of tiger sightings. Limited slots per day ensure minimal disturbance to wildlife.

  • ✦ Jeep safari with max 6 passengers
  • ✦ Morning (6:00–9:30 AM) & Evening (3:00–6:30 PM) slots
  • ✦ Zones: Tadoba, Moharli, Kolara, Navegaon
  • ✦ Canter safari available in Moharli zone

Buffer Zone Permit

Buffer zone permits grant access to the transitional forest areas surrounding the core zone. Ideal for birdwatchers, nature photography enthusiasts, and visitors seeking a more relaxed, less competitive safari experience.

  • ✦ More permit slots available
  • ✦ Zones: Junona, Khutwanda, Agarzari
  • ✦ Lower fees than core zone
  • ✦ Excellent for leopard & wild dog sightings

Special / Research Entry

Special entry permits are issued for wildlife researchers, journalists, documentary filmmakers, and NGO conservation teams. These require prior written approval from the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Chandrapur.

  • ✦ Requires prior DCF approval letter
  • ✦ Available for extended hours
  • ✦ Night entry possible with special permit
  • ✦ Different pricing structure

Insider Advice

Top 8 Tadoba Safari Permit Tips

These insider tips from experienced Tadoba visitors and our safari concierge team will help you secure the best permits — even during peak season.

01

Book 90 Days Early

The portal opens bookings exactly 90 days in advance. Set a reminder and log in at midnight for peak season dates (Oct–Mar). Morning slots on weekends vanish within hours.

02

Target Tadoba & Moharli Zones

Tadoba and Moharli core zones have the highest tiger sighting rates. If these are full, Kolara gate is the next best option with excellent tiger territories in the eastern sector.

03

Choose Morning Slots

AM slots (6:00–9:30 AM) consistently outperform PM slots for tiger sightings. Tigers are most active in the early hours, especially near waterholes in summer months (April–June).

04

Book Multiple Days

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Book at least 2–3 safari slots across different days and preferably different zones to maximize your chances of memorable encounters.

05

Watch Cancellation Window

Check permit availability daily — cancellations open up permits even 24–48 hours before safari day. Use the portal's "Available Slots" filter and act quickly when you see openings.

06

Peak Season Strategy

During Diwali, Christmas, and New Year holidays, permits sell out in under 10 minutes. Enlist help — have a family member log in simultaneously for different zones to improve booking chances.

07

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made 48+ hours before safari: 90% refund. 24–48 hours: 50% refund. Less than 24 hours: No refund. Weather-related closures are handled separately with full refunds.

08

Use Our Concierge

If you struggle with the portal or face language barriers, use our safari concierge service. We handle permit booking, provide naturalist-guided jeeps, and organize comprehensive tour packages.

Avoid These Errors

Common Tadoba Permit Mistakes to Avoid

⚠️

Wrong Name Entry

Entering names differently from ID cards. Use exactly the same spelling as on your Aadhaar/Passport — even small mismatches can cause denial at the gate.

⚠️

Booking Wrong Zone

Not checking which gate corresponds to your booked zone. Each zone has a specific entry gate — Tadoba, Moharli, Kolara, Junona, Khutwanda — and you cannot swap zones on arrival.

⚠️

Arriving Late

Gates close at the exact safari start time. Arriving even 5 minutes late means forfeiting your permit with no refund. Factor in distance from your resort to the specific gate.

⚠️

Forgetting ID Originals

Carrying only photocopies of ID without the original. Most gates require original government-issued photo ID for every adult. Photocopies alone will not be accepted.

⚠️

Ignoring Monsoon Closure

Tadoba is closed from July 1 to October 15 for monsoon. Booking permits during this period is not possible. Plan your visit between October and June for the best experience.

Safari Permit Dos & Don'ts

Permit Dos

  • ✓ Carry your original printed/digital permit at all times during the safari
  • ✓ Show permit at every checkpoint inside the reserve without hesitation
  • ✓ Stay within permitted zones and routes only — your naturalist/driver will guide you
  • ✓ Return through the designated exit gate before the slot time ends
  • ✓ Report any violations or suspicious activity to forest officials

Permit Don'ts

  • ✗ Never attempt to share a permit with an unregistered person — it's illegal
  • ✗ Don't enter restricted zones beyond your permit's scope — heavy fines apply
  • ✗ Never exit the vehicle inside the core zone without express permission
  • ✗ Don't attempt to bribe gate officials — this leads to permanent blacklisting
  • ✗ Avoid photographing forest officials, checkposts, or military installations
  • ✗ Never overstay your slot — exiting after the designated time attracts penalties

Common Questions

Tadoba Safari Permit FAQs

You can book Tadoba safari permits up to 90 days in advance through the official Maharashtra Forest Department portal. For peak season dates (October to March) and holidays, we strongly recommend booking on the day the slot opens — exactly 90 days before your intended safari date. Competition for popular slots is extremely high.
Yes, a small quota of permits (approximately 20% of total capacity) is reserved for on-the-spot booking at the gate. However, these fill up very quickly, especially in peak season. We recommend arriving at the gate by 5:00 AM for morning slots to stand a chance of getting a walk-in permit. Online advance booking is always the safer option.
The Maharashtra Forest Department's official cancellation policy is: 90% refund for cancellations made 48 or more hours before the safari time. 50% refund for cancellations made between 24 and 48 hours before. No refund for cancellations within 24 hours of the safari slot. In case of park closure due to rain, fire, or administrative reasons, full refunds are issued.
No. Each permit is specific to a single zone and a single slot (AM or PM). You cannot use one permit to access multiple zones. If you wish to visit both the Tadoba core zone in the morning and the Kolara buffer zone in the evening, you need to purchase two separate permits for those respective slots.
Tadoba safari permits are strictly non-transferable. The permit is linked to the specific names and ID details entered during booking. If a registered person cannot attend, the only option is to cancel the permit (subject to refund policy) and book a new one for the replacement person — which may not be possible if the slot is full.
Tadoba National Park's core zone is closed from July 1 to October 15 every year due to monsoon season. Some buffer zones like Junona and Navegaon remain open year-round. No permits are issued for closed zones during the monsoon period. The park re-opens for the peak season on October 15 (or 16th if 15th is a holiday), and this date sees massive demand for permits.
